About Dr Joanna Emanuel

Dr Joanna Emanuel, also known commonly as “Jodie”, is a founding member of the Cooper Street Clinic since its inception in 2001. Originally from Wellington, New Zealand, she graduated from Otago University in 1993, as Top Graduate in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and with Honours across all subjects. She worked in Wellington Hospital before moving in 1995 to Sydney Children’s Hospital and Prince of Wales Hospital. She completed her Paediatric diploma from University of NSW in 1997, before deciding to specialise in General Practice, marrying and having three children. Jodie completed her Fellowship of the Australian College of General Practitioners whilst working in various General Practices across Sydney, including two years practicing in a Kings Cross Practice and The Kirketon Road Centre, where she gained invaluable experience in the areas of Drug and Alcohol addiction and Sexual Health Medicine.

Jodie has particular interest in the care of the “whole” patient and family, paediatrics and mental health. Obstetrics is still a love of Jodie’s, and she is affiliated in the Shared Care Antenatal Care programme at Royal Hospital for Women (Randwick). Through her own experience with her teenage and young adult children, Jodie is empathetic to the social pressures and associated difficulties they may encounter, and enjoys working with them to improve their health. Another area of interest is Menopausal Care, and the Hormonal and lifestyle issues in this evolving area of medicine.

Jodie is a strong believer in holistic care and the importance of her patients’ mental health and healthy lifestyle.  She is a devout Yoga practitioner, and is passionate about a broad approach to health through food, exercise, and stress and lifestyle management. Jodie loves her practice of Family Medicine, the relationships she has built with patients and their families over many years and the satisfaction of providing a continuum of care.
